Project Description
Historic Renovation for Affordable Housing
U.W. Marx was engaged to transform the historic VanZandt, Jacobs & Co. Collar and Cuff Factory at 621 River Street in Troy into The Hudson Arthaus, an affordable housing project aimed at Troy’s artist community.
The renovation/restoration project has converted the historic former textile factory building into residential and commercial space, including 80 low-income apartments and a 15,000 SF art gallery and studio space for the tenants in the basement level. Collar Works, a local nonprofit dedicated to the support of emerging and under-represented artists, will be a tenant and adviser on the new artspace.
The five-story (with high basement) 100,000 SF building was constructed in two phases between 1896 and 1903. It was home to the VanZandt, Jacobs & Co. from 1896 until 1920, and continued to house textile firms into the 1980s. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
