Rensselaer Waterfront Development

siteplan

The New Development at Rensselaer is all about re-establishing Rensselaer’s historic connection to the Hudson River.

The vision proposes a dramatic re-connection of the city fabric of streets and blocks from Rensselaer’s downtown, and the new Amtrak train station, into an authentic mixed use development, right on the edge of the Hudson River. This connection will be achieved through the creation of high quality public spaces: the extension of New Broadway, Rensselaer’s main street, right to the Hudson, and the establishment of a new waterfront town square called Rensselaer Waterfront Development. It will be the northernmost harbor on the Hudson, and will serve as the transportation and recreational front door to the entire Albany/Rensselaer area. Current plans show the development will be built in phases, with the First Phase comprising 200 +/- new residential units, 40,000 GSF of retail, and the creation of the new harbor and pier.  The First Phase will be complete in it self, and will transform the image and character of the site, drawing people to the riverfront for the quad-centennial of Hudson’s famous voyage up the river.  The development of the hotel, office and mid-rise housing are each planned as a flexible development site to follow the First Phase.

The New Development at Rensselaer will achieve success for Rensselaer and the Hudson River in many ways:

  • Create a Waterfront Harbor that will serve both sides of the river.
  • Extend Broadway directly down to the waterfront to re-connect Rensselaer’s main street to the Hudson River.
  • Leverage the newly built Amtrak Station by connecting it with pedestrian walks to the new waterfront.
  • “Rensselaer Waterfront Development" will be the new destination on the Hudson River for tourist and recreation.
  • Maximize the activities in the water and in Rensselaer Waterfront Development with a variety water uses and waterfront activities.
  • Create a "Broadway Square" as a welcoming arrival to Rensselaer’s waterfront that will revitalize all of Broadway.
  • The new development includes a variety of uses like a real waterfront city along with retail and waterfront attractions.
  • Start a "Blue Loop" public promenade and trail that connects both sides of the river and becomes the central waterfront park for the entire area.
