NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE / NEW CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATIONS

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, Museum & Home Site, Hyde Park, NY

This presitigious project was awarded to U.W. Marx by the National Archives and Records Administration. NARA conducted a nation-wide search for a construction company with proven experience in historic restoration and renovation, as well as sensitivity to the unique challenges encountered at a national historic site.

Renovation & restoration work at the original library building included substantial repair and enhancement of the library’s roofing system, as well as the creation of a new 3,000-square-foot special exhibit gallery.

Additionally, the project included new construction of the Henry A. Wallace Visitor, Education & Conference Center.

The new 25,000-square-foot Wallace Center, designed by R.M. Kliment & Frances Halsband Architects of New York City, now serves as entry point for the site’s more than 125,000 annual visitors. The building offers multipurpose rooms designed to host international conferences, school groups and special programs, as well as a café and new museum store.

The Center also includes visitor orientation exhibits, state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities and a 140-seat auditorium for presentation of a high-definition film depicting the lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The project was recognized by New York Construction News with a 'Best of 2004 Award of Merit: Cultural' for projects completed in New York, New Jersey & Connecticut in 2004.

DANCE BUILDING / REHABILITATION

SUNY Purchase College Dance Building, Purchase, NY

U.W. Marx provided general contracting services at SUNY Purchase for the purpose of rehabilitating the school's unique Dance Building, which had been damaged by water intrusion. The renovation project involved a complete replacement of the skylight system, curtainwall and masonry flashing. The repair work is expected to maintain the integrity of the building, while also enhancing the structural make-up of the active dance facility.

According to SUNY Purchase's web site, "the award-winning Dance Building, designed by Gunner Birkerts, is the first facility in the United States to be constructed solely for the study and performance of dance."

Architectural services for the rehabilitation project were provided by Robert Siegel Architects of New York City.

PERFORMANCE THEATER / RENOVATIONS

St. Joseph Hall, College of St. Rose, Albany, NY

In recent years U.W. Marx has provided both general contracting and Design-Build services for numerous projects at the College of St. Rose.

Crozier Associates of Albany provided architectural services on the renovation of St. Joseph Hall, while the new Campus Activities Center was constructed in conjunction with the architectural firm of Glynn Spillane Griffing Architects. The new Natural Science Center and Albertus Hall projects were conducted in partnership with the architectural firm of Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Achitecture & Engineering, PC of Albany, NY.

All of the state-of-the-art facilities combine contemporary and historic construction, blending beautifully with the Victorian neighborhood and the surrounding campus buildings. Reaching this lofty goal required a close working relationship with the college and architects.

"We are pleased when we see U.W. Marx on the bidder's lists because it establishes a level of quality, commitment to schedule, and good team building."

Working with Envision Architects of Albany, the U.W. Marx construction management team converted an historic bank building into a state-of-the-art radio studio and performance space. The first floor was renovated into the new 200-seat Linda Norris Auditorium.

It is a cultural and artistic center, where musicians, performers, academic forums, films, and lectures are featured. The first floor's new 260 SF entranceway leads guests to the main stage area under a restored cathedral ceiling. The box office, cloak room, and green room area are situated along the perimeter of the stage.

"One of the best things that ever happened to WAMC was finding U.W. Marx to manage the construction of our New WAMC Performing Arts Studio. These people stand behind their work and even after the project is done, if there is tweaking to be done, they're right there making it even better."

PERFORMANCE THEATER / NEW CONSTRUCTION

Yulman Theater for the Performing Arts, Union College, Schenectady, NY

Designed as a state-of-the-art teaching lab for theater arts and sciences, the Yulman Theater at Union College is an integration of complex mechanical/electrical systems and performing arts spaces.

U.W. Marx worked with the architectural firm of Hardy, Holtzman, Pfeiffer Associates, LLP, premiere theater architects whose past projects have included Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

The project presented a challenge to the U.W. Marx team, as it required considerable coordination of the mechanical/electrical systems with the whisper-quiet HVAC systems. These systems required electronic lighting controls and digital-direct HVAC controls to maintain an appropriate environment.

Other features included in the project were theater lighting, a campus-wide energy conservation system, and broadcast-quality audio/video studios.
