MEDICAL FACILITY / ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
New Maternity Ward, The Kingston Hospital, Kingston NY
The Kingston Hospital Maternity project involved a significant gut and renovation of an
existing 11,000sf 4th floor Medical/Surgical patient bed unit.
The new unit was constructed to consolidate the two individual departments at The Kingston Hospital and Benedictine Hospital
as part of the merger of these two facilities.
The project involved the construction of a new C-section Procedure Room, Nursery, and eight new Labor & Delivery Rooms
along with support spaces. As with most medical projects the mechanical systems were critical with
new roof-top air handlers, completely new duct system, HEPA filter/fan unit for the Nursery, addition of hot water reheat coils throughout,
upgrades and replacements of medical gas systems, and new Emergency Power circuiting throughout.
The renovation was rendered more challenging by its location directly above a functioning Cardiac Unit.
The project was completed on-time in less than four months.

MEDICAL FACILITY / ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
Master Facilities Plan Phase I, St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY
U.W. Marx is providing construction services to St. Peter's Hospital for multiple projects
on the healthcare facility campus as part of the hospital's Master Facilities Plan Phase I, including
renovations and/or additions to the McAuley Electrophysiology Lab, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Dialysis Room, Spiritual Care Center
and Medical Library, as well as the contruction of
eight new orthopedic operating rooms and clinical laboratories.
Significant mechanical upgrades were also performed on the hospital's Cusack building.
The projects are part of a larger $300 million expansion and renovation of the hospital,
allowing it to continue its long history of providing high-quality health care to NY's Capital District.
Marx has worked closely with
Envision Architects,
ICOR Engineering,
Ryan-Biggs Associates
and Excel Engineering, carefully coordinating the consultants and subcontractors to ensure that the multi-phased, fast-tracked projects allow the hospital's operations
to continue unabated throughout all construction processes.

MEDICAL FACILITY / ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
Master Facilities Plan, Benedictine Hospital & The Kingston Hospital, Kingston, NY
This project is being completed as Master Facilities Plan Phase I associated with the execution of the consolidation
of the two hospitals as mandated by the New York State Commission on Hospitals.
The work involves the creation of a “General Acute Hospital” at the 160-bed
Kingston Hospital, to include:
- Emergency Department expansion and renovation
- Renovations to the Obstetrics Suite to include eight Birthing Suites, an OR, and four Labor and Delivery Rooms
- Conversion of the current Substance Abuse wing to a twenty-bed Medical Surgical Unit
The portion of the project at the 225-bed Benedictine Hospital involves:
- A third floor vertical expansion for new OR Suites
- Additions and renovations to the current Emergency Room for conversion into an Urgent Care Center and Psychiatric Emergency Dept
- An addition for a new main hospital entrance and lobby.

MEDICAL FACILITY / ADDITION & RENOVATIONS
The Cancer Care Center at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY
U.W. Marx provided construction services to St. Peter's Hospital for an addition
and renovations to the Cancer Care Center.
The Cancer Care Center project consisted of 12,000 SF of interior renovation and a 3,000 SF addition to the existing facility.
The renovation portion of the project was completed in five phases with each phase being completed while the remaining facility remained fully operational.
Daily coordination with staff with regard to staging of material and tools in the project phase, routing patient traffic safely
in and out of the center, and timing of excessive noise generating activities was critical. With highly compromised
patients on the other side of construction barriers in all phases, infection control and dust protection were of paramount importance.
The addition included a new CT Simulator, which was built directly adjacent to an existing Simulator that remained in service during construction.
The addition also included a new Varian Linear Accelerator requiring a concrete vault on a 3’-0” thick matt slab foundation with 4-1/2” to 7’-0” thick cast-in-place
concrete walls and roof structure for radiation shielding.
Careful execution of the project phasing allowed the hospital's cancer care operations to continue
unabated throughout the duration of the project.

MEDICAL FACILITY / RENOVATION
South Tower Bed Expansion, Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY
U.W. Marx provided general contracting services for an interior retro-fit project at
Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The project encompassed more than 26,000 square-feet of the full-service hospital's South Tower.
The scope of work at the Hudson Valley hospital included extensive mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades,
new floor, wall and ceiling finishes, and high quality architectural woodwork.
These renovation efforts on the tower's sixth and seventh floors have provided for the addition of 80 new
patient beds and accompanying nurse stations.

MEDICAL FACILITY / RELOCATION - RENOVATIONS
Skilled Nursing Facility Relocation, Ellis Hospital McClellan Campus, Schenectady, NY
U.W. Marx has been retained by Ellis Hospital to provide construction management services at the McClellan campus in Schenectady, NY for
renovations to the 2nd and 3rd floors of the existing facility to accommodate a new Skilled Nursing Facility.
The project consists of the complete gut and renovation of approximately 43,000 sf of existing hospital patient bed space to accommodate
85 new resident beds, family lounges, dining areas, library, nursing control spaces, and administrative offices.
The project includes complete new air handling equipment and distribution, controls, domestic water supply, waste, and vent for toilet rooms
in all patient rooms, medical oxygen gas system throughout, and a complete new electrical distribution system.
Phasing and logistics is of particular interest in that much of this project is constructed over an existing Operating Room and
Urgent Care Center.
U.W. Marx's Healthcare Division has been involved in this project from the earliest stages of design development to accurately
quantify the value of these complicated logistics and to prepare complete initial budget estimates from only a single floor plan
and written narratives of the intended program. An extensive value engineering analysis is required to ensure that the
project does not exceed the client's budget.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
BIM for Mechanical System Coordination
U.W. Marx Construction Company has adopted a leadership role among Capital Region construction firms in its use of Building Information Modeling
(known as BIM) software to manage the complex coordination of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems on the firm’s construction projects.
The image to the right shows an excerpt from the larger, overall view of the above-ceiling mechanical systems on a recent project.
The excerpt highlights a critical interference (the routing of medical gas systems conflicts with the routing of domestic hot and cold water)
that the U.W. Marx construction management team was able to identify early in the project, prior to installation. A change to the design drawings
at this time greatly minimized time consuming and costly re-work.
The November 2008 issue of Health Facilities Management magazine highlights this exact use of BIM for mechanical system coordination as some of the
most advanced technology being used by some of the most sophisticated construction managers across the United States.
As noted in “Building information modeling saves time, smoothes logistics”,
‘(BIM) software can produce significant time savings, smooth project logistics and facilitate communication with both clients and subcontractors’.
U.W. Marx Construction Company is committed to staying on the forefront among construction management firms in the implementation of this
cutting-edge technology. Recent/current projects where U.W. Marx has utilized BIM includes significant renovation and new construction projects at St. Peter’s Hospital, The Kingston Hospital,
Benedictine Hospital, Albany Memorial Hospital, Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, Glens Falls Hospital and Saugerties Public Library.
