MUSEUM / ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs, NY

U.W. Marx's assignment as Construction Manager was to work with Butler Rowland Mays Architects, LLP to renovate the existing building into a first-rate retrofit museum befitting the Upstate New York horse-racing and resort community.

Marx constructed a new 10,000 SF addition around the existing museum while it remained fully operational, and then renovated 28,000 SF of the existing museum during a winter/spring shutdown.

The award-winning project included installation of a complete new heating, A/C, humidification and temperature control system, 4,500 SF of new exhibit space, and new entryways, main lobby, and gift shop. Also, existing dormant space was converted into collections-storage with state-of-the-art climate-control capabilities.

"The project (National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame) was an important undertaking by the Museum. It involved not only the addition of new exhibition and collection storage space, but also the renovation to virtually all of our existing facility. We had far too much to risk if we exceeded the budget or were not able to open the new wing in time for our 50th Anniversary. Our new exhibition facility, which was designed to maintain an extremely stable museum climate, had to be completed in advance of the actual public opening, so that we could prove that it was safe to display approximately $300,000,000 worth of borrowed paintings."
Peter H. Hammell, Director, National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE / NEW CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATIONS

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, Museum & Home Site, Hyde Park, NY

This presitigious project was awarded to U.W. Marx by the National Archives and Records Administration. NARA conducted a nation-wide search for a construction company with proven experience in historic restoration and renovation, as well as sensitivity to the unique challenges encountered at a national historic site.

In addition to extensive renovations and restoration at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, the project included new construction of the Henry A. Wallace Visitor, Education & Conference Center.

Designed by the firm of R.M Kliment & Frances Halsband Architects, the new 25,000-square-foot Wallace Center now serves as entry point for the site’s more than 125,000 annual visitors. The new building offers multipurpose rooms designed to host international conferences, school groups, and special programs, as well as a café and new museum store.

The Center also includes visitor orientation exhibits, state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities and an auditorium for presentation of a high-definition film depicting the lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The project was recognized by New York Construction News with a 'Best of 2004 Award of Merit: Cultural' for projects completed in New York, New Jersey & Connecticut in 2004.

SENIOR HOUSING/HISTORIC RESTORATION & RENOVATION

Acton Civill Polytechnic Institute, Coeymans, NY

U.W. Marx was hired to carefully renovate and convert the long-vacant and deteriorated school building into a much-needed community senior housing facility. The building was rehabilitated with funding from the New York Housing Trust Fund and private investors.

Marx successfully converted the building, constructed in 1874, into 28 apartments which were designed for moderate income senior citizens. Redevelopment included the installation of an elevator, community room, library, and laundry facilities.

The National Historic Register-listed building is well-suited to meet the needs of its mature residents, and once again contributes to the region's tax base.

PERFORMANCE THEATER / HISTORIC RENOVATION & RESTORATION

St. Joseph Hall, College of St. Rose, Albany, NY

In recent years U.W. Marx has provided both general contracting and Design-Build services for numerous projects at the College of St. Rose.

Crozier Associates of Albany provided architectural services on the renovation of the Music Division & Auditorium at St. Joseph Hall.

The Marx project team's passion for their work is evident throughout the renovated and restored structures. The result for the college was performance spaces that showcase the integration of traditional architecture and craftmanship with modern technology.

PERFORMANCE THEATER & RADIO STUDIOS / RENOVATIONS

Linda A. Norris Auditorium, WAMC Northeast Public Radio, Albany, NY

An historic bank building was converted into a state-of-the-art radio studio. The first floor was renovated into the new 200-seat Linda Norris Auditorium.

It is a cultural and artistic center, where musicians, performers, academic forums, films, and lectures are featured. The first floor's new 260 SF entranceway leads guests to the main stage area under a restored cathedral ceiling. The box office, cloak room, and green room area are situated along the perimeter of the stage.

"One of the best things that ever happened to WAMC was finding U.W. Marx to manage the construction of our New WAMC Performing Arts Studio. These people stand behind their work and even after the project is done, if there is tweaking to be done, they're right there making it even better."

HOTEL/RESORT HISTORIC RENOVATION & RESTORATION

Gideon Putnam Hotel & Conference Center, Saratoga Springs, NY

U.W. Marx conducted two unique construction projects on the grounds of the landmark hotel, located in the heart of the Saratoga Springs State Park.

In 1981, Marx constructed a major addition at the Gideon Putnam Convention Center. In 1990, as a direct result of the quality craftsmanship provided during the conference center project, Marx was contracted to direct a major restoration & renovation effort at the Gideon Putnam Hotel.

The project featured enhancements to the hotel lobby, kitchen and dining facilities, as well as extensive upgrades to the historic structure’s mechanical & electrical systems.
