"Throughout the project (Phoenix Home Life Insurance Operations Center) U.W. Marx's personnel were vigilant in keeping to a very aggressive (some said impossible) construction schedule and guarded budget. Due to this vigilance Phoenix realized a 13% savings on its budget and opened the facility on schedule. Not only were your people highly professional and extremely competent, they were, as individuals, a great pleasure to work with."

NEW CONSTRUCTION

Phoenix Home Life Operations Center, East Greenbush, NY

The Phoenix Home Life Insurance Operations Center is a new, award-winning 146,000 SF corporate office and operations center completed on an extreme fast-track schedule. The design and construction team lead by U.W. Marx and architect Gregory Seleman, who is now associated with Woodward Connor Gillies & Seleman Architects was given only 14 months from the date of site selection to design & construct the building for client occupancy.

The compressed schedule was further complicated by the owner's desire to have an architecturally significant building on a topographically challenging site. The selected site had a highly variable rock profile with weak overburden soils. The geotechnical report indicated a rock-bearing foundation system would be required. After evaluating the options available, the design and construction team chose a drilled concrete pier system, saving the owner time and money.

The building consists of four levels of occupied space with a 5th-story mechanical penthouse. The exterior skin of the structure is pre-cast concrete panels with a two-tone exposed aggregate finish. Construction of the Class A Office Building included installation and commissioning of state-of-the-art telecommunications, computer and environmental systems as well as advanced lighting controls.

Upscale finishes were constructed in many areas, such as the corporate boardroom and dining facility. Constant value analysis and cost control allowed the owner to meet their budget while incorporating numerous aesthetic upgrades.

The main floor of the station includes attractive retail space for bookstores, giftshops, coffee bars and restaurants.

The U.W. Marx Construction Management team also constructed a new 3,000 SF United States Postal Service branch inside the transportation facility.

In addition, several elevators were upgraded and two new elevators and three new entranceways were constructed.

NEW RESTAURANT CONSTRUCTION

McDonald's Restaurants, NYS Thruway Service Plazas

U.W. Marx constructed new McDonald's Restaurants at Mohawk Service Plaza and Malden Service Plaza, both located along the NYS Thruway.

The Marx project team overcame numerous obstacles in meeting the owner's agressive timetable, including continuing construction through one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record in upstate New York.

"I can definitely say that I have never had a job (McDonald's at the Mohawk Service Plaza) where all parties, inspectors, project managers, superintendents and tradesmen were such (a) cohesive team unit with a can-do attitude that persisted to make this goal happen...congratulations to you and your organization...they were truly magnificent."

COURT HOUSE RENOVATION

Troy Public Safety Building, Troy, NY

Renovations to the City of Troy's 30,000 SF police headquarters and city court included additions and restorations to the court rooms, holding cells, entry ways, elevators, maintenance and storage areas. A major part of the restoration was masonry work and reinforcement of the building's historical facade.

The construction phase plan allowed both the police station and the city court system to stay operational throughout the project's duration.
