EXPANSION & RENOVATION

Case Library & Geyer Center for Information Technology at Colgate University, Hamilton, NY

MARX/GILBANE - A Joint Venture provided Construction Management At-Risk services for this major project at Colgate University. The scope of work included renovation of the existing 101,000-square-foot Everett Needham Case Library and the addition of the 54,000-square-foot Geyer Center for Information Technology to accomodate the University's expanding archival and IT services.

Included in the work was the addition of a new fifth floor (with separate entrance) housing a 24-hour study area with café as well as separate areas for videoconferencing, multimedia production, and public computing. A phased construction methodology was employed to minimize interference with on-going activities on the picturesque upstate NY campus.

A key element of the project was the installation of a robotic storage/retrieval mechanism (LASR) capable of housing more than 500,000 books. The LASR can accept a book request and then deliver the book to the circulation desk in only minutes.

The resulting facility and programs are expected to embody Colgate's goal of integrating the intellectual, social and collaborative academic activities of the Colgate community.

HIGHER EDUCATION CONSTRUCTION / REHABILITATION AND RENOVATIONS

van den Berg Learning Center, State University of New York at New Paltz, NY

The U.W. Marx General Contracting Division conducted major facility upgrades for the State University Construction Fund on the SUNY New Paltz campus. Marx was awarded contracts to perform Phase I & Phase II of the van den Berg Learning Center renovation.

Working with The Hall Partnership Architects, LLP of New York City, Marx rehabilitated the entire historic van den Berg building to accommodate the School of Business and the Nursing Program.

The renovation has doubled the amount of classroom and lab space for the School of Business and incorporated several state-of-the-art classrooms wired with the latest educational technology, including 17 "smart" classrooms. These classrooms were outfitted with video-data projectors, sound systems, DVD/VCR playback, desktop computer/video/audio inputs and document camera touch-screen and/or push-button system controllers.

The official dedication of the new School of Business & School of Nursing facilities was held on May 16, 2006. Visit SUNY New Paltz on the web to learn more about the exciting changes happening at the school.

NEW CONSTRUCTION

Multiple Projects, Union College, Schenectady, NY

U.W. Marx has constructed two new buildings (and performed renovations on two more) on the campus at Union College, providing both Design-Build and general contracting services.

The Design-Build Viniar Athletic Center project consisted of constructing a new 1,000-seat multi-use facility connected to the east end of Union's Memorial Field House, with direct access to the existing structure's equipment storage facilities and locker rooms.

Designed as a state-of-the-art teaching lab for theater arts and sciences, the Yulman Theater for the Performing Arts is an integration of complex mechanical/electrical systems and performing arts spaces.

The scope of renovation work at the 1900's era Reamer Campus Center building included renovation of the upperclasses' dining facilities, the student activies center, and a number of the school's business offices. Marx successfully renovated the basement of the school's Social Sciences building during a 10 week summer break in 2007.

You can learn more about the new Viniar Athletic Center, Yulman Theater and Reamer Campus Center at Union College.

REHABILITATION AND RENOVATION

Multiple Projects, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY

U.W. Marx has completed two significant projects on the campus of Vassar College.

The renovation of the All Campus Dining Center at Vassar College included demolition, interior renovations and installation of new electrical and mechanical equipment.

This project highlighted U.W. Marx's attention to detail and exemplary craftsmanship in creating a dining facility that retains its historic architectural charm while adding state-of-the-art features.

Included in these modern features is an electronic dining menu for students, faculty and campus guests.

Marx also constructed the Vassar Facilities Operations Center. The structure houses the school's building & grounds departments, as well as facilities planning and custodial services.

NEW CONSTRUCTION, RENOVATIONS AND ADDITIONS

Multiple Projects, Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY

U.W. Marx has provided construction services to HVCC since 1984. New construction has included the Fitzgibbons Health Technologies Center, Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, and the new Administration Building, pictured at far right.

Additions and renovations have been successfully completed on numerous campus buildings, including the Siek Campus Center, Guenther Hall, Cogan Hall, Brahan Hall and Dwight Marvin Library.

The college has remained fully operational throughout all construction processes, including during the recent renovation of the SIEK Campus Center. Marx has provided on-site construction consultant services for the project, working with the design team from Architecture Plus of Troy, NY.

At left is the Guenther Enrollment Services Center. According to then-HVCC President John L. Buono, "by gutting a 1950's era administration building and transforming it into a contemporary student-focused service center that is both functional and beautiful to look at, U.W. Marx has earned our respect and admiration."

NEW CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATIONS

Multiple Projects, College of St. Rose, Albany, NY

In recent years U.W. Marx has provided both general contracting and Construction Management services for numerous projects at The College of St. Rose.

The new Natural Science Center and the Albertus Hall renovation projects were conducted in partnership with the architectural firm of Einhorn, Yaffee and Prescott Achitecture & Engineering, PC of Albany, NY. Crozier Associates provided architectural services on the Madison/Morris Music Division renovation project & the restoration of the Auditorium at St. Joseph Hall, while the new Campus Activities Center was constructed in conjunction with the architectural firm of Glynn Spillane Griffing.

All of the state-of-the-art facilities combine contemporary and historic construction, blending beautifully with the Victorian neighborhood and the surrounding campus buildings. Reaching this lofty goal required a close working relationship with the college and architects.

"We are pleased when we see U.W. Marx on the bidder's lists because it establishes a level of quality, commitment to schedule, and good team building."
