U.W. Marx Completes QUAD Expansion Project at Clarkson University
U.W. Marx has completed an aggressively-scheduled 'summer-slammer' project at Clarkson that added an additional floor to each of the freshman 'Quad' residence halls - Ross, Cubley, Reynolds and Brooks. In addition to the new fourth floor, the project scope of work included asbestos abatement and major renovations to the four buildings' mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. This major project, involving more than 30,000 s/f of new construction and 95,000 s/f of renovation work was delivered by the Marx team in only 13 weeks.

The fast-tracked project required elements of Design-Build construction to meet the Owner's required completion date of August 15, 2009. Working closely with architectural firm Perkins + Will of Boston, Massachusetts, the U.W. Marx team completed all construction operations in time to allow students into the residence halls prior to the start of the 2009 fall semester.

Clarkson alumni on Marx's project team included Sr. Project Manager Chris Hewison, PMP, LEED(R) AP (Clarkson '95) and Assistant Project Manager Dan Tuttle (Clarkson '09). The Marx team was rounded out by Assistant Project Manager Jarrod Mills and Project Superintendent Paul Arena.

Additional project details and photography can be found on Clarkson's web site at the Quad Addition construction page.

Saugerties Public Library Celebrates Groundbreaking
An enthusiastic crowd of community members, library supporters, public officials and project team members were on hand for the library's groundbreaking ceremony. Brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures greeted the group as they celebrated the official start of construction.

New construction at the 1915 Carnegie Library will include a two-story addition of approximately 8,000 s/f connected to the south façade, and a two-story, 1,100 s/f addition to the east façade of the building. Current plans show renovations to the existing building being constructed on a phased basis as new work is completed, allowing the library to continue to serve its patrons.

U.W. Marx is serving as construction manager for the project, working closely with Butler Rowland Mays Architects of Ballston Spa, NY. Current plans show construction reaching completion in the fall of 2010.

NYS First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson Accepts Gift Commemorating 'Greening the Mansion' Inititaive NYS First Lady Paterson Announces LEED (R) Gold Certification at Northeast Green Building Conference 2009
NYS First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson made a surprise announcement at the event, verifying that the US Green Building Council had certified the NYS Executive Mansion at the Gold level, surpassing the Silver level for which the project had originally applied.

Mrs. Paterson's 'Greening the Mansion' initiative, begun by former First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer, included a number of energy-efficiency improvements (including installation of photovoltaic panels and energy-saving appliances), ecologically-sound maintenance practices, hybrid-powered 'green' maintenance equipment, as well as a local and organic food policy.

The NYS Governor's Mansion, a 150 year-old structure located on Eagle Street in Albany, New York is now the first executive residence in the United States to be certified at the Gold level. Colorado's executive residence is the only other executive residence to achieve LEED certification, reaching the 'basic' LEED level in fall of 2008.

Wayne Williams, LEED AP, Chief Sustainability Officer at U.W. Marx and Vice Chair of the NY Upstate Chapter of the US Green Building Council, indicated that the event was very well-received, and plans are already underway for the 2nd Annual NEGBC, to be held beginning on April 22nd (Earth Day) in 2010.

The Northeast Green Building Conference is a collaborative educational effort of the US Green Building Council New York Upstate Chapter, Associated General Contractors of NYS and the Workforce Development Institute at Hudson Valley Community College.

Planned Stony Creek Free Library U.W. Marx Selected LEED & Construction Consultant for Stony Creek Free Library Project
The Stony Creek (NY) Free Library Board of Trustees has selected U.W. Marx as LEED and Construction Consultant for their planned addition and historic renovation/restoration project at the former Stony Creek Methodist Church. The Board of Trustees hopes to design and construct the building to meet LEED Gold-level certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The library board has analyzed and reviewed numerous design opportunities and challenges with their architectural consultant, and is now moving further into the schematic design phase. By including U.W. Marx Chief Sustainability Officer Wayne Williams, LEED AP early in this process, the Board of Trustees is on track to realize their commitment to designing and constructing a building that will not only serve the needs of the Adirondack hilltown's community members, but will also serve as a living example of sustainability.

The project to convert the deconsecrated church to a library with community gathering spaces has been registered with the USGBC.
